“People are Awful,” is a captivating spoken word performance intertwining various LGBTQ stories of love, family, and resilience.
Guided by storyteller and actor, Joseph Kearney, this one-man show delves deep into personal narratives, exploring themes of love addiction, loss, and healing. Through experimental storytelling techniques, including puppetry, pre-recorded video, and audio conversations seamlessly woven with live performance, “People are Awful” delivers a raw and authentic experience.
Audience members are not passive viewers but rather are lead through various sets representing key turning points in the storytellers battle with sex, love and drug additiction. Rooms include Sex and Love Addicts Annoynmous meetings, the free STD clinic waiting room, an apartment orgy, a popular gay bar, a music festival and the sistine chapel.
Kearney’s personal journey and lived experience serves as the backbone of the production, inviting audiences to connect with the universal aspects of storytelling and the shared human experience.
This 60-minute mixed-media production has earned the prestigious honor of Next Best Fringe award at the Amsterdam Fringe Theatre Festival 2022 and reprised its performance in Amsterdam Fringe 2023.
People are Awful is touring The Netherlands in 2024 with performances in Arhnem, Nijmegen and Amsterdam.
